Creatine can be a smart tool for the right student-athlete, but it should not be treated casually. The decision should be based on the athlete’s age, sport, training, nutrition, hydration habits, goals, and testing level.

The Big Idea: Creatine Is A Tool, Not A Shortcut

Creatine does not replace training.
It does not replace food.
It does not replace sleep.
It does not turn a casual athlete into a serious one.
What it can do is help support certain types of high-intensity performance when the rest of the foundation is in place.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements explains that creatine helps supply muscles with energy during short, high-intensity activity and may support repeated bursts of effort such as sprinting and weight training.
That is why creatine is often discussed for sports like football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, volleyball, lacrosse, and other sports that involve power, strength, speed, jumping, sprinting, or repeated explosive movement.
But the question is not, “Does creatine work?”
The better question is:
Does creatine make sense for this athlete right now?
What Creatine Actually Does

Creatine is naturally found in the body and helps support quick energy production during short, intense efforts.
Think of moments like:
Exploding off the line.
Jumping for a rebound.
Accelerating into a sprint.
Swinging a bat.
Pushing through a heavy set in the weight room.
Repeating hard efforts during practice.
Creatine supports the energy system that helps with those short bursts.
That does not mean every athlete will respond the same way. It also does not mean creatine will make up for poor training or weak nutrition.
It works best when the athlete is already doing the work.
That is why parents should see creatine as a support tool, not the centerpiece of the plan.
Start With The Foundation

Before a student-athlete takes creatine, parents should look at the basics.
Is the athlete eating enough?
Are they getting protein consistently?
Are they fueling practices and lifts with enough carbohydrates?
Are they drinking enough water?
Are they sleeping enough?
Are they training consistently?
If those answers are weak, creatine is not the first fix.
The first fix is the routine.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that athletic performance depends on adequate calories, fluids, carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. That matters because no supplement works well on top of poor daily habits.

Creatine may make the most sense for athletes involved in strength, power, and repeated high-intensity sports.
That could include:
Football players building strength, power, and lean mass.

Baseball players working on strength, power, and bat speed.
Track athletes in sprint, jump, or power events.
Wrestlers who strength train and need repeated effort.

Creatine may not be the right first step if the athlete is skipping meals, barely drinking water, sleeping poorly, training inconsistently, or using it because a teammate said to.
It may also deserve extra caution if the athlete has medical concerns, kidney disease, takes medications, or has a history that makes supplementation something a physician should review.
For minors, parents should be involved in the decision.
If there is any medical uncertainty, talk with a physician, registered dietitian, athletic trainer, or qualified healthcare professional before starting.
That is not fear-based.
That is responsible.
The Safety Conversation Parents Should Understand

Creatine is one of the most researched sports nutrition supplements.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition has stated that creatine monohydrate is effective for increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass during training, and that properly supervised creatine use in adolescent athletes may be acceptable when appropriate.
That last part matters:
Properly supervised.
For student-athletes, creatine should be used with parent awareness, a clear reason, proper dosing, hydration, consistent nutrition, and quality product selection.
It should not be borrowed from a teammate, ordered randomly online, or treated like “more is better.”
More is not better.
Correct is better.
Creatine And Hydration

Creatine and hydration belong in the same conversation.
Some parents worry that creatine automatically causes dehydration or cramping. The research picture is more favorable than that, but the practical coaching point remains simple:
An athlete using creatine should take hydration seriously.
That is especially true for athletes training in Stone Mountain, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Snellville, Lithonia, Tucker, Decatur, and the rest of Metro Atlanta, where heat and sweat loss are real factors during practices, camps, and summer workouts.
A student-athlete should not be using creatine while treating water like an afterthought.
Hydration supports performance, recovery, and overall training quality.
That is not optional.
What Type Of Creatine Should Parents Look For?

For most athletes, creatine monohydrate is the standard.
Not the most exciting.
Not the flashiest.
The standard.
Creatine monohydrate is the form most commonly studied in sports nutrition research.
Parents do not need to chase complicated blends, extreme claims, or products that make creatine sound like a miracle.
Simple is usually better.
Look for:
Creatine monohydrate.
Clear labeling.
Appropriate serving size.
No unnecessary stimulant blend.
No extreme claims.
Third-party testing when the athlete is serious, tested, or college-bound.
The product should be easy to explain.
If the label makes the parent feel confused, that is a sign to get guidance before buying.
Tested And College-Bound Athletes Need A Higher Standard

If your athlete is being recruited, preparing for college, attending showcases, or may compete under NCAA rules, supplement selection matters more.
The NCAA Banned Substances page explains that student-athletes are responsible for what they consume, including supplements and medications. The NCAA also says it does not approve dietary supplements.
That does not mean creatine is automatically off-limits.
It means the product choice needs to be smarter.

The Parent Decision Filter
Before your student-athlete starts creatine, ask these questions:
Goal: What are we trying to improve: strength, power, lean mass, repeated effort, or training quality?
Foundation: Is the athlete eating, hydrating, sleeping, and training consistently?
Sport: Does creatine fit the demands of the athlete’s sport and position?
Age and maturity: Is the athlete responsible enough to use it correctly?
Health: Are there any medical concerns, medications, or reasons to consult a healthcare professional first?
Product quality: Is the product clearly labeled and appropriate?
Testing level: Is the athlete tested, college-bound, or competing at a level where NSF Certified for Sport® should matter?
Explanation: Can the athlete explain why they are taking it?
If the answer to that last question is no, pause.
The athlete needs more education before they need the supplement.
